Description 1659-1666
The effects of solar UV radiation (280-400
nm) on growth, photosynthesis
and of red alga Pyropia yezoensis
were investigated when the thalli were cultured under solar radiation with or
without UV.  Most of inhibition and
lowest recovery about photosynthetic performance were found in the thalli
exposed to full solar spectrum. UVB (218-315 nm)
decreased the growth rate under both high light (HL)
and low light (LL) conditions. Presence
of UV-A (315-400 nm) enhanced the
phycobiliprotein content, while UV-B inhibited it. UV played a positive role in
stimulating the synthesis of carotenoid and UV-absorbing compounds, which
contributed to the protection of the photosynthetic apparatus. The results
showed that high light and UV radiation inhibited photosynthesis and growth of P. yezoensis, but a few basic
physiological strategies were activated when the thalli were cultured under
high solar irradiance, such as dynamic photo inhibition and accumulation of
carotenoids and UV-absorbing compounds.
