Subject Ulva fasciata
Antibiotic sensitivity
Methanol extract

Description 2244-2253
Macroalga, Ulva fasciata was collected, extracts prepared, fractionated using
different solvent systems and screened for their antibiotic sensitivity against
pathogenic bacterial strains. Methanol
extract of U. fasciata
inhibited 66% of Gram +ve bacteria, whereas the activity was less
towards aqueous extract.  Inhibitory
potential of methanol extract of U.
fasciata
was high with 78.5 mm2 towards Gram +ve
strain of Staphylococcus aureus at 20oC
than at 30oC compared to
the commercial antibiotics. Among the active fractions, successful inhibition was noted in FD2 - CH2Cl2:
MeOH (1:1), M4 - Methanol - Acn and MD1-MeOH - dcm fractions. The
FD2 (chloroform and methanol combinations) fraction against MOF 1 (shrimp,
Penaeus monodon isolate) and
MOF 2 (Clown fish isolate) isolates were found to be most active with
highest inhibitory zone of ≥143.06 mm2.
