Description 1112-1119
To study the Antibiogram of crude methanolic extracts of five marine gastropods and two bivalves collected from south east coast of India (Gulf of Mannar). The disc methods (mm) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) technique were used to study the antibacterial activity of these molluscs against six bacterial pathogens. The crude methanolic extracts of all the molluscs showed significantly activity against one or more bacterial tested. MIC of crude extract was found in the range of 20-40 mg / mL against pathogenic bacterial strains. Chicoreus ramosus, Murex trapa and Arca conplanta exhibited broad spectrum activity against all the bacterial tested (6-15 mm). The bivalve of Chama reflexa methanolic extract was weakly active against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi and S. paratyphi but demonstrated good activity against Vibrio cholera, V.parahaemolyticus and Aeromonas hydrophilla. The result of the present study coral reef associated molluscs screened exhibited bioactive potential activity against six bacterial strains.
