Description 378-387
Information on age, mortality, recruitment and dynamics of cobia stock inhabiting in Indian waters is meager. Hence an attempt has been made to estimate the age, mortality, recruitment and other stock assessment parameters of cobia occurring in the North West coast of India. Specimens collected from resource survey vessels and commercial vessels from Mumbai were utilised for the study. Growth parameters, namely asymptotic length(L), growth coefficient (K) and age of fish at length zero (t0), estimated following Ford Walford plot and von Bertalanffy plot were 194.25, 0.24 and -0.615 respectively. Natural mortality coefficient and total mortality value estimated were 0.416 and 0.76 respectively Fishing mortality (F) and exploitation ratio (E) estimated were 0.36 and 0.47. Lower rate of natural mortality indicates that more fishing effort is needed to achieve maximum sustainable yield. Probability of capture of cobia in trawl fishery, L25, L50 and L75 values were estimated at 20.2 cm, 46.4 and
71.65 respectively. Seasonal recruitment pattern and virtual population analysis of cobia was carried out and explained. Relative
yield per recruitment and biomass per recruitment analysis was carried out to understand the dynamics of Cobia fishery. Thomson and Bell yield and stock prediction model was fitted to understand the status of stock and to predict the optimum effort to ensure maximum sustainable yield.
