Description 350-355
Growth and survival of the mussel Brachidontes variabilis (L) was investigated under shaded and unshaded treatments in the epifaunal and infaunal substrates in the Suez Canal. Summer and winter results of transplanted mussels reveal an advantage in growth and survival of the infaunal mussels, which buffered from thermal stress, as compared to epifaunal mussels which suffered from such stress. Shaded mussels in both substrates had higher survival and growth rates than unshaded ones particularly in summer. In winter months which is characterized by mild temperatures and high food levels, the mussels grow and survive better than in summer. Settlement of mussels was heavy during summer and scarce during winter. All settlement happened on the epifaunal hard substrate without any difference bem een shaded and unshaded treatments.
