Textural characteristics of the sediments off Honnavar, south West coast of India, revealed that the sediments were generally clayey in nature. It is poorly sorted, positively skewed and mesokurtic. The positive skewness of the sediments are indicative of low energy conditions in the nearshore region promoting accumulation of fine fraction of sediments. The poor sorting implied that the transportation agencies were incapable of separating the sediments into different size grades. Multigroup discrimination analysis suggests that these sediments are derived from shallow marine origin and contributed by salinity and differential settling velocities. |
