Atmospheric and hydrographic parameters over Chilka lagoon are studied from March 1987 to February 1988. Salinity, water temperature and depth exhibit large temporal and spatial variations. Wind field is observed to be highly variable during the period of observation. Momentum flux and the sensible and latent heat fluxes are more during pre-monsoon and monsoon periods. Thermal instability (water warmer than air) prevails on most of the days during the period of observation and is inversely related to wind speed. Comparative study of the important surface features between 1986 and 1987 for the months, June and September, show significant interannual and interseasonal variability. |
