Surface sediment samples from the shelf off Kasargod were collected and analysed for their organic matter and carbonate content. Sediment samples located off the river mouth are characterised by low carbonate values and high organic matter. Carbonate dilution is very prominent in the near shore regions. The study also reveals a discrete difference in the organic matter content at the modern-relict sediment boundary. Organic matter distribution of the shelf sediments may be used as an additional tool to recognise the recent-relict sediment boundary. |
