Description 231-232
Estimation of photosynthetic pigments of benthic microflora inhabiting the Cochin estuary was carried out. Their quantitative abundance and physiological state in polluted and unpolluted areas were discussed in terms of pigments. The estuary is very rich in benthic microflora playing dominant role in the total productivity of the ecosystem. The ratios of interrelationship of chl-a.-c, and carotenoids indicate the physiologically active state of benthic microflora. One station located in a chronically polluted area of estuary recorded higher ratios of carotenoids to chi-a. The annual contribution of chlorophyll-a is estimated to be 70.35 mg.m(-2).
