Ag, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn and Hg contents of surficial sediments and waters from 5 areas of distinct anthropogenic activities along the southwest coast of Pakistan were estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometric technique. Based on maximum-to-minimum concentration ratio for each metal, the following order of metal concentrations in the aqueous medium emerged: Mn > Cu > Cd > Cr > Ag > Pb > Ni > Zn > As > Fe > Hg. For sediments the following order was observed: Cd > As > Ag > Hg > Pb > Cu > Zn > Ni > Fe > Cr > Mn. Seawater showed an overall large dispersion of trace metals as compared to sediment. The sediment-water trace metal correlation study showed strong correlation between Ag, Cu and Fe. Largest concentration dispersion was observed for Zn and Ni in sediment. The study revealed that the mouth of river Indus and Karachi harbour areas contained enhanced levels of trace metals in both sediment and seawater, resulting from increased human interference in terms of industrial and municipal effluents.
