Hypnea valentiae (Turn.) Mont. was investigated for its growth under different proportion of domestic effluent and seawater mixtures. The alga showed maximum biomass under 40% effluent - seawater mixture. The alga grown in 40% domestic effluent-seawater mixture was studied for its growth, kappa-carrageenan contents and the efficacy of removal of nutrients such as NO3, NO2, NH4 and PO4 in the medium under different light intensity and quality. Maximum biomass of the plant was obtained at 30 muEm-2s-1 (control). Accumulation of total carbohydrate and SO4 content was maximum at lowest light intensity (2 muEm-2s-1). Lower light intensities did not favour the accumulation of 3,6 anhydrogalactose. The alga grown under lower light intensities exhibited a greater efficiency of removing nutrients in the medium. Maximum amount (%) of NO3, NO2, NH4 and PO4 removed by 100 mg of H. valentiae at 2muEm-1S-1 was an increased of about 3, 51/2, 8 and 7 folds respectively when compared to control. Spectral irradiances such as blue, green, yellow and red enhanced the growth and nutrients removal of H. valentiae. The alga grown under red light exhibited a maximum removal of nutrients viz. NO3, NO2, NH4 and PO4 was more than 2, 3, 6 and 4 folds respectively to that of visible light. |
