Description 207-209
Variations of degree of saturation of CaCO3 With respect of calcite and aragonite in the surface water have been determined in relation to chlorinity and CaCO3 (non lithogenous fraction) content of surface sediment of Hugli estuary. Increasing trend of saturation was found from river end to sea end and sediment contains 0.7 to 3.3% CaCO3. Average concentration of organic carbon in the sediment was 0.34%, mainly contributed by phytoplankton productivity in the overlying water. The molar ratio of CaCO3 and organic carbon in the sediment was 0.72. The biogenous precipitation/dissolution of CaCO3 Played a significant role for the variations of its degree of saturation apart from the physical processes of mixing.
