Ablation of eyestalks induces precocious moulting and accelerates growth in males of prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii. The average time required for 50% of the individuals to complete fourth moult in controls (group I) was 114 d, 72.5 d in unilaterally ablated prawns (group III) and it was only 21 d in bilaterally ablated prawns (group II). Correspondingly the growth rate was 9.3% in group II. 26.4% in III and only 24% in I. The mortality was more in group II than in III or I. |
