Upper ocean thermal structure off the coast of Karwar during the withdrawal of monsoon (15 to 30 September 1987) was examined utilising digital bathythermographic profiles. Vertical temperature profiles (15 to 26 September 1987) along sections 14 ᵒ45’ minutes, 15ᵒ15’ minutes N showed an up sloping of isotherms towards coast in the upper 100 m suggesting the process of upwelling, whereas the down sloping of isotherms below 100 m depths showed an indication of downwelling in association with a northward flowing undercurrent. Time series data collected at 15ᵒ 08 minutes N and 73ᵒ22 minutes E over 3 d (27 to 30m September 1987) showed strong variations in the thermocline. Under weak wind conditions the ocean gained heat energy at a rate 112 W.m -2 which increased the SST by 0.68 ᵒ C. The surface mixed layer varied between 5 and 16 m during the observational period. A uni-dimensional model was utilised to simulate mixed layer characteristics which showed fairly good agreement between observed and simulated values, confirming the importance of forced and free mixing in the local mixed layer dynamics on short time scales (few hours to few days). |
