Uptake of nitrate in S. swartzii is reduced in dark but enhanced in light 50±2 uE m-2 s-1. No such difference between light and dark uptake of ammonium is seen. When nitrate and ammonium are added together in the incubation medium, these are taken up simultaneously. Slight inhibition of nitrate uptake is seen in presence of ammonium, but ammonium uptake is not affected by the presence of nitrate. At a given particular concentration of nitrate and ammonium, apical portions are more active in taking up the nutrients compared to the basal portions. |
