Distribution of salinity and silicon in the Cochin estuary, Kerala, India shows marked spatial and seasonal variations. During monsoon (June - September) a distinct stratified layer is observed near Cochin barmouth while the southern part appears well mixed. During premonsoon (February - May) the estuary is generally well mixed throughout, whereas postmonsoon (October - January) is a transition period. High monsoonal riverine input of reactive silicon (RSi) is quantitatively lost in the estuary largely influenced by salinity. Negative correlation exists between salinity and Si indicating conservative behaviour for reactive silicon in the estuary. |
