Description 181-186
Bioassay experiments were conducted with 4 marine diatoms, Skeletonema costatum (Grev) Cleve, Melosira moniliformis (Muller) Ag, Stephanodiscus sp. and Navicula longa (Greg) Ralfs, to assess the toxicity of effluents and sediment residues collected from 2 discharge canals of the zinc smelter factory. Growth of diatoms was inhibited significantly in 0.01 to 0.5% conc. of effluents and residues tested and waste of canal-II was more toxic than that of canal-I. Growth stimulation was seen in M. moniliformis, Stephanodiscus sp. and N. longa exposed to 0.001 and 0.01% of effluents and residues, indicating the fertilizing effect of zinc smelter wastes at very low concentrations.
