Activity of biofouling organisms growing inside the seawater intake tunnel results in alterations in cooling water characteristics such as increase in turbidity, total suspended matter, particulate organic matter and ammonia content and a decrease in dissolved oxygen, diatom number and chlorophyll a. It is suggested that such tunnel systems can be used as experimental models to study community ecology of benthic suspension feeders. |
