Abundance and distribution of fungi in water and sediment samples were studied. Twenty six species of fungi belonging to 14 genera were recorded in monthly samples collected for 2 y. The most dominant forms in all the stations were Aspergillus flavus Link ex Fr., A. niger Van Tieghem, A. terreus Thom., Cephalosporium acremonium Corda., Emericella nidulans (Eidam) Vuill. and Penicillium citrinum Thom. Percentage of aspergilli isolated was quite high in all sites. Number of fungi varied in each station, ranging from 110.1-1 to 29.g-1 but seasonal variation was not well pronounced. Polluted waters gave more fungal counts throughout the year than the clean waters. |
