Carrageenan, a sulphated polysaccharide, has been isolated from 3 species of red algae (Acanthophora spicifera, Grateloupia indica and Halymenia porphyroides) and the yield is respectively 18.82, 32.46 and 26.18 per cent on dry weight basis. That the polysaccharide is carrageenan is confirmed by IR spectral features, which are similar to those exhibited by standard λ-carrageenan. |
