Subsurface currents, temperature and salinity at a station off Visakhapatnam (at 10,25,50 and 85 m), Andhra Pradesh, India are monitored for 3 d period using moored Aanderaa RCM-4 current meters. The isotherms configuration indicates upwelling and very low surface temperature ( < 26ᵒC) in the coastal region. The clockwise rotation and diminishing magnitude of residual current vectors from top to bottom, in the presence of southwesterly winds suggest Ekman type of circulation. The currents in the pycnocline are superposed with oscillations around 12 h periodicity. A weak and almost uniform flow field is observed nearer to the bottom. The offshore components of the currents show a net offshore flow in the mixed layer and onshore flow in the pycnocline. Spectral analysis proves that the maximum energy in the oscillations of temperature, salinity and currents, is concentrated in the semi-diurnal tidal frequency band (0.00117 to 0.00156 cycles -1). Surface layer is unstable (Ri < 25) except for a short period. Although, the water column in the middle layer exhibits stable nature spells of instability occur when the current at 50 m opposed the current at 25 m. The Ri in the bottom layer indicates that the water column is always dynamically stable. |
