Variations in phytoplankton population density and photosynthetic pigments together with various physico-chemical parameters were studied at an interval of 2h over a 24h period (11-12 January 1989) at a fixed station in the mid-reaches of the Rushikulya estuary. Species diversity and population density of phytoplankton increased during flood tides and decreased during ebb tides. Fluctuations in chlorophyll a, in general, followed the cell number. Concentration of nutrients, especially silicate and nitrate increased markedly during ebb tides. Nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and silicate showed inverse relationships with salinity. |
