Littoral macrobenthos (September 1986-May 1988) at 5 selected stations off Visakhapatnam showed 201 species of benthic organisms belonging to 19 groups. Polychaetes followed by bivalves, gastropods and echinoids were numerically most important groups. Based on faunal distribution and abundance, 3 distinct bottom communities could be recognised in the study area. They were Clypeaster-Nassarius-Charybdis-Oliva community characterising silty sediments; Mactra-Macoma community of the sandy sediments and the transitional Mactra-Charybdis community. The study revealed characteristic response gradients of fauna in relation to sediment texture and depth. |
