Based on chlorophyll and carbon uptake data, collected during Anton Bruun cruises, and values for the algal carbon-to-chlorophyll ratio determined elsewhere, phytoplankton community division rates near light saturation between about 0.5 d-1 and 1.5 d-1 are obtained for the central and southern Arabian Sea during the January to May periods of 1963 and 1964. Division rates of about 1.5 d-1 are estimated for the western and northwestern Arabian Sea during October/November of 1963. Implications of these results for the prevailing grazing rates, the current knowledge of the chlorophyll distribution, and methods for future measurements of primary production in the region are discussed. |
