Concentrations of nitrite, nitrate and phosphate are reported for Cochin backwaters-a tropical estuary-as time series curves. Results exhibit pronounced seasonal variation and distribution patterns indicating large inputs possibly from industrial units, sewage works and agricultural runoff. On the northern parts of the estuary, a core of high values during premonsoon suggests the presence of an external input source not previously reported. Variation in nutrient behaviour resulting from interbasin transfer of water and the construction of water barrier is also discussed. |
