All the 3 different age groups of the bivalve studied showed circadian respiratory biorhythm corresponding to the diurnal tidal rhythm, i.e. maxima at high and minima at low tides. The maxima of respiratory activities for all the age groups during the nocturnal high tides as compared to those during daylight high tides were 42, 28 and 73% with increase in age (4!, 5 and 6! months, respectively). It is apparent that P. virdis L. possesses a bioclock for its circadian respiratory rhythm which is directly related to the diurnal tidal rhythm in the tropics. |
