Description 24-28
Quantitative phytoplankton sampling was carried out at 2 stations in Vellar estuary during 1983. Phytoplankton bloom comprising mainly diatoms was observed in March and September/October. Phytoplankton cell counts varied from 700 to 73,620 cells.l -1 during the study period. The blooms were related to variations in monsoonal precipitation, salinity, light penetration and nutrients. In terms of surface area the phytoplankton varied from 0.5 to 31.5 x 107 ยตm2.l -1. The influence of the size and shape of cells of the species on the phytoplankton population and bloom characteristics was observed. Seventeen species of diatoms formed blooms on the basis of surface area. Concentration of each species in bloom was also determined.
