A systematic study on the performance of Transit navy navigation satellite system (NNSS) over the Bay of Bengal within the lat. 12ᵒ to 14N, during the cruises of R V Samudra Manthan revealed that for certain periods of the day extending over 2 to 3 h, no Transit satellites were found over the horizon and consequently no satellite lixes were available for position updates. This resulted in considerable decrease in the navigational accuracy of the ship, which is of vital importance in offshore surveys. In view of this a method has been devised to obtain intermediate position fixes between 2 satellite lixes by regression analysis. |
