Bivalves and polychaetes contributed to the bulk of the benthic fauna in the Mulki Estuary, Karnataka, India, Meretrix casta, Paphia malabarica and Modiolus undulatus were generally abundant. While adults dominated the catches during premonsoon, juveniles were abundant during postmonsoon season. Among the polychaetes, Dendronereis arborifera and Sabellaria cementarium were dominant; December to January being favourable. Bivalves dominated at stations having sediment with medium, fine and very fine fractions. S. cementarium was more in sandy stretches, while D. arborifera favoured regions of fine sand admixed with silt and clay. |
