Of the 223 species of fungi isolated from different depths of mangrove mud 64 species are recorded for the first time. Highest number of fungi are isolated from surface layer and their number and frequency decrease with increasing soil depth. There is a direct correlation between number of fungi and amount of organic matter. Among the forms isolated few show specific occurrence at certain depth of mud. Salt tolerant forms are also isolated by supplementing the medium with higher concentrations of NaCl. |
