Effect of Ag, Cu, Zn and Pb ions on the oxygen consumption of P. viridis and M. casta was studied. Sublethal concentrations of Ag, Cu and Zn functioned as respiratory depressants in both the species. Decrease in respiration in P. viridis occurred above 0.01 ppm with Ag and 0.05 ppm with Cu. Whereas in M. casta the rate of oxygen uptake reduced above 0.02 ppm in the case of Ag and Cu and 1 ppm in the case of Zn. However, Pb, at higher concentrations ( > 0.4 ppm) accelerated oxygen uptake, Depressive effects of oxygen consumption was manifested at concentrations much below the LC 50/96 hr values. |
