Description 90-95
Seasonal histological observations of the gonad of the estuarine arcid Anadara rhombea (Mollusca: Bivalva: Arcidae) reveal that the animal is unisexual and has an extended breeding period with spawning activity from February/March to September. Breeding activity seems to be positively influenced by salinity. Majority of the animals in 21-25 mm size, attain first sexual maturity and males mostly dominate the population. Males mature earlier than females. Size dependent variation in sex ratio is also discernible. Peak occurrence of bivalve veligers in Porto Novo waters coincides with the spawning season of A. rhombea.
