Occurrence of Monostroma sp. from the coast of Okha, Gujarat, India has been reported. The leafy macroscopic gametophytic phase alternates with asexual microscopic sporophytic phase (Codiolum-like). Based on its chemical composition and comparison with Japanese species of Monostroma and Porphyra it is suggested that this alga may be cultivated as a food source. |
