The relationship between soluble reactive orthophosphate and inorganic phosphate solubilising bacterial population showed that the availability of various fractions of phosphorus is perhaps not influenced by the activity of microorganisms. Seasonally, more of phosphatase producing bacteria were observed during northeast monsoon (Oct.-Dec.) and postmonsoon (Jan.-March) seasons in estuarine and mangrove biotopes. The production of phosphatase seems to be repressed under the conditions of excess inorganic phosphate concentration. In addition to bacteria, some fungal strains were also found to be phosphatase producers. |
