Studies on the respiratory movements of Balanus amphitrite amphitrite have shown a `critical oxygen concentration' of 2.5 ml O2/l. A fall in the rate of respiratory movements is observed below this concentration and below 1.5 ml O2/l, the animal exhibits a shift into anaerobic metabolism. |
