Description 122-127
Distribution and seasonal variation of macrobenthos in 3 different (marine, gradient and tidal) zones of Vellar Estuary, Tamil Nadu, India were quantitatively assessed using a Petersen grab. The fauna comprised polychaetes, bivalves, gastropods and crustaceans. Although, faunal similarity between stations was high, the relative abundance of each species was different. Distribution of the benthic fauna was studied in relation to seasonal changes of bottom salinity, temperature, oxygen, pH, bacterial population, total organic carbon and the physical nature of substratum. Of all 3 stations, first, situated at the mouth of the estuary, exhibited a more diverse community structure and a greater number of animals than the other 2 upstream stations. A rapid depletion of benthic population was recorded during the northeast monsoon.
