Currents are of tidal origin and show a biomodal distribution at 2 locations in the inner Bombay Harbour (Maharashtra, India) area during 28 October to 27 November 1976. At location 1, maximum near bottom currents recorded are 0.85 m/sec towards 60ᵒ during flood and 0.59 m/sec towards 280 degrees ebb. However, at location 2 ebb currents are stronger than flood currents and the maximum current speed is 0.98 m/sec towards 100ᵒ during flood and 1.19 m/sec towards 275ᵒ during ebb. Semi-diurnal tidal components contribute 91 to 94% of the total energy, whereas the diurnal components contribute only 2 to 3%. Progressive vector diagram shows a strong drift (76 km) towards north at location 1, whereas the drift at location 2 is only 44 km towards north-west. Linear relationship exists between rate of tidal variation and maximum flood and ebb current of each tidal cycle. Maximum flood current occurs 1 to 3 hr nearer to high water for 58% of the time at location 1 and at location 2 it occurs 2 and half to 4 hr nearer to high water for 79% of the time. |
