Occurrence and abundance of the postlarvae of different marine prawns were studied on the basis of plankton samples collected during 1975 from 19 stations situated in Cape Comorin, Quilon and Cochin sections. Occurrence of postlarvae of inshore prawns, Penaeus indicus, Metapenaeus dobsoni, M. affinis and Parapenaeopsis stylifera was mainly restricted to nearshore areas, while postlarvae of deepwater prawns were more confined to offshore regions. Postlarvae were observed throughout the year, the peak being in premonsoon months. In general the postlarvae were comparatively more abundant in the northern region than in the southern part of the study area. |
