Bimonthly surface samples of water, plankton and hydrography data were collected from Sept. 1978 to Aug. 1979 from 26 stations of the coastal waters of Kuwait. Surface water temperature ranged from 30.8°C to 16.18°C while salinity ranged from 40.04 to 36.27%. Dissolved oxygen and turbidity values showed wide fluctuations while the range in pH was from 7.4 to 8.6 High values for all active chlorophyll pigments were recorded during November-December while the peak of phytoplankton cell numbers occurred during March-April. The most important constituents in the phytoplankton community were Rhizosolenia spp and Chaetoceros spp. Maximum numbers of phytoplanktonic genera were deserved during March-April and July-August while most of the important planktonic genera had their peaks during or after May-June to September-October. Occurrence of dense patches of extremely fragile thin walled globular brownish macroalgae floating in the water was noted throughout. Zooplankton numbers and volume were directly related. Kuwait Bay was richer than the southeast coastal waters of Kuwait both in numbers and volume were directly related. Kuwait Bay was richer than the southeast coastal waters of Kuwait both in numbers and volume of zooplanktonic forms. High peak of zooplankton abundance (numbers and volume) was during July-August. In all stations copepods formed the most important constituent followed by other crustaceans and chaetognaths. The cladoceran Penilia avirostris Dana occasionally formed a considerable portion in the total zooplankton community and it occurred even when the temperature reached up to 32.8°C in the surface waters during July. Surface primary productivity computed from total chlorophylls for the whole area varied from 0.03 to 2.63 gC/m3/day while phytoplankton standing stock computed from chl a ranged from 39 to 2727 mg C/m3. Surface zooplankton standing stock computed from zooplankton volume ranged from 1.3 to 4057 mg C/m3. The ratio of the standing stock of phytoplankton to zooplankton ranged from 6.8 to 0.67 for the whole coastal waters. Standing stock of phytoplankton was more during the latter part of the year, from September to December, whereas peak zooplankton standing stock was during July-August. |
