S. deyrollei is a functional hermaphrodite which produces both types of sexual cells simultaneously. During one calendar year there are 2 spawning seasons separated by a long quiescent phase when almost all individuals in the population act as males and therefore approach a totally unisexual condition. This species ingests good amount of detritus and bulk of its food comprised diatoms which have been identified. |
