As a part of ecological studies on the marine fouling community of Vizhinjam Bay, fouling algae are studied in relation to some of the environmental variables (temperature, salinity, nitrate and phosphate) during 1977-78. Algae (121 species) belonging to 6 major classes have been identified and their seasonal occurrence noted. Diatoms are the most dominant group in the fouling algal community. Tube-dwelling benthic diatoms such as Navicula comoides, Navicula grevillii and Nitzschia sp. have been reported for the first time from India. The presence of Calothrix (Cyanophyceae) is significant due to its nitrogen fixing capacity. Dense settlement of diatoms has been noticed in September and other algae in January. |
