Metabolism of the euryhaline N. hedleyi and the stenohaline T. furcifera, from the Cochin Harbour region was studied in relation to body weight. The b values obtained for N. hedleyi acclimated in 5 and 20%. salinities were 0.5959 and 0.6043, respectively and the value for T. furcifera acclimated in 30% salinity was 0.5461. Statistical difference between these values was insignificant. N. hedleyi showed almost the same rate of respiration in both 5% (175.2 µl O2/g/hr) and 20% (186.1 µl O2/g/hr) salinities. In T. furcifera the rate (54.41 µl O2/g/hr) was much lower. Reasons for the above physiological phenomena were discussed. |
