Description 131-134
Marked difference in salinity tolerating capacity in summer (19.2 % during March to May) and in monsoon (12.2 % during August) due to gradual acclimation was observed in Paphia laterisulca. Clams in low salinity showed progressive delay in the time of opening of valves irrespective of the nature of transfer either sudden or progressive. With the shell valves closed (artificially or naturally) the exchange between the mantle water and outside medium was very little, as the nature of closing constituted a very effective insulating mechanism. Change in the mantle water salinity on exposure during low tide was insignificant in the normal life of the clams in nature. Stimulus due to osmotic pressure reaching the edges of mantle from the outside medium was responsible for opening the shell valves though some salt was necessary to fully open.
