Sediment samples from 27 locations in Kuwaiti waters collected during January to March 1979 were mud of fine texture. Among benthic diatoms Coscinodiscus spp and Pleurosigma spp formed the most important constituents. Average sediment chl a and phaeopigment value was 2.9 and 23.6 mu g/g dry wt respectively. Protein, carbohydrate, fat, ash, organic carbon, phosphate, nitrate, silicon and calcium were respectively 0.23, 0.5, 0.16, 87.59, 0.7, 0.05, 0.005, 18.02 and 13.1%. The calorific value was 48 cal/g dry wt. Commercially important benthic marine forms of Kuwaiti waters like Penaeus semisulcatus de Haan, Liza macrolepis (Smith) and Pinctada margarittifera Linne ingested large amounts of fine benthic mud which might supply a considerable amount of their energy requirements. Harmful toxicants like metallic compounds and hydrocarbons, added to the sediments, would be directly absorbed and conveyed to the human population. |
