Description 43-46
Quantitative abundance of indicator bacteria, viz. coliforms, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus faecalis, in sediment and water samples from 6 sewage outfall stations of Cochin backwaters, Kerala, India is studied for 1 yr. FC/FS (faecal coliform/faecal streptococci) ratio indicates that the principal source of faecal pollution is non-human type originating from land drainage, discharge of organic waste and also from sewage discharge. Based on quantitative abundance and distribution of these organisms the 6 stations are classified as intensely polluted, fairly polluted, and slightly polluted. Consumption of edible animals obtained from the Cochin estuarine environment, as a source of health hazard is highlighted.
