Twelve strains isolated from freshwater fishes were identified as V. parahaemolyticus using a battery of morphological, cultural and biochemical tests. Characteristics of these were compared with 2 confirmed strains of V. parahaemolyticus isolated from the Vellar estuary, Tamil Nadu, India. In general, characteristics of the freshwater strains conformed to those exhibited by the estuarine strains with only minor variations and showed a percentage similarity > 94.6. All the strains isolated were Kanagawa negative and thus non-pathogenic. |
