Monazite in beach placers of Visakhapatnam-Bhimunipatnam Coast is identified as thorium rich variety, cheralite, based on X-ray and chemical studies. It has radioactivity alpha = 3360 c/hr mg; beta = 2100 c/min/g in contrast to Kerala cheralite having alpha = 4398 c/hr/mg and beta = 2725 c/min/g. The concentration of monazite (2-6%) is related to the source rocks, charnockites, which are located in the head-waters of the Gosthani River. |
