Ripples have been observed in the sea bed in the shallow areas of Bombay Harbour. Well defined ripples are common around thal Shoal and in the nearshore area off Karanja Island and not so well defined in the offshore. Ripples are marked by straight symmetrical crests with uniform height, spacing (av. wave length 200 cm) and direction (ENE-WSW). These ripples are classified as symmetrical wave ripples and mega/large ripples. Though the area has strong tidal currents the ripples are parallel to the tidal currents (ENE-WSW) and perpendicular to the wave direction during the fair season (NW). They appear to have been formed mainly by the wave action during the fair weather and maintained by the tidal currents. |
