Distribution of dissolved silicate in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal was studied using data collected during the 12th, 13th, 20th and 21st cruises of R V Gaveshani during 1976-77. In the Arabian Sea silicate values in the surface waters were >4µ g-at/litre north of 15 ° N. Silicate distribution near the head of the Bay of Bengal did not show the expected rise suggesting that the Gangetic contribution to the sea is insignificant. In surface waters the silicate ranged from 0.5-2.5 and from 1 to 7.5µ g-at/litre in Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal respectively. In general silicate values increased with depth but no intermediate maximum as in the Pacific was observed. The studies suggest that silicate data in conjunction with salinity, temperature and density can be used in the delineation of water masses.
