Toxic effects of copper (0.1-1.8 mg), lead (1.2-18.4 mg) and mercury (0.04-0.59) on L. macrolepis were studied in a continuous flow-through system. On 96 hr exposure to different concentrations of lead, a significant (P < 0.01) decrease in activities of erythrocyte delta-amino levulinic acid dehydratase and plasma glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase was noted, decrease in the former being highly dose related. Mercuric chloride above 0.29 mg/litre caused increase in the blood pH, osmolarity, and total proteins. Copper induced a marked increase in plasma glucose and blood lactate contents. |
